Welcome to Arusha, Tanzania! As a volunteer with Social Warriors Volunteering, you are
embarking on a journey filled with meaningful experiences, cultural immersion, and opportunities for personal growth. This guidebook is designed to help you make the most of your time in Arusha, providing valuable information, tips, and recommendations to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and impactful volunteering experience.

1. Introduction to Arusha:

Located in northern Tanzania, Arusha is a vibrant city nestled at the foothills of Mount Meru. Known as the gateway to some of Africa's most iconic national parks, including Serengeti and Kilimanjaro, Arusha boasts stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a diverse community of locals and expatriates.

2. Cultural Etiquette and Customs:

  • Respect local customs and traditions, including greetings and gestures of respect.
  • Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural communities.
  • Avoid public displays of affection, as it may be considered inappropriate in some
    contexts.
  • Always ask for permission before taking photos of individuals or religious sites.
  • Remember to remove your shoes before entering someone's home.

3. Safety and Security:

  • Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
  • Avoid walking alone at night, and use reputable taxi services if necessary recommended
    by the Social Warriors Volunteering officials.
  • Keep your belongings secure and be cautious of pickpockets in crowded places.
  • Follow the advice of local authorities and avoid political demonstrations or gatherings.
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and the location of the nearest embassy
    or consulate.

4. Accommodation and Living Arrangements:

Depending on your volunteer program, accommodation in an apartment, private/shared bedroom, small kitchen, garden and restaurant.

Make yourself at home, respect the rules of your accommodation, and communicate openly with your hosts or fellow volunteers

5. Transportation:

Public transportation in Arusha primarily consists of dalla-dallas (minibusses) and boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis).

While these options are affordable, they can be crowded and less reliable. Consider using reputable taxi services for longer journeys or traveling in groups for safety.

6. Health and Wellness:

  • Stay hydrated and use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun's rays.
  • Practice good hygiene, including washing your hands regularly and drinking bottled or purified water.
  • Be mindful of what you eat and opt for cooked foods from reputable establishments.
  • Make sure you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation if
    needed.

Your volunteer coordinator will provide detailed information about your project, including schedules, expectations, and safety protocols. Embrace each opportunity to contribute to the community, engage with locals, and learn from your experiences.
